Tuesday night, Ellie got a call from Jeremy confirming everything. DEAL was on!! (just prepare yourself… warning you right now this blog is full of puns…but you KENT go wrong with puns about these towns…). We invited Leah and our friend Krista (both from Washington. Krista was an RA too J ) to join us. The guys couldn’t meet us till a little later in the afternoon so we decided we would swing by a town called Sandwich (no joke). It’s hard to beat my Bath one but I couldn’t resist taking another punny picture. We found a place for lunch called… yupppp… “The Sandwich Shop”. I got a salad. Just kidding ;P Well actually I did get a salad but also of course, a sandwich. And yes, I took my picture eating a sandwich in front of The Sandwich Shop in Sandwich. Ahhhh so excellent ((:
Sandwich was a cute little (legitimately little) town. We did a lap around the town (basically) and stopped into some local shops and got to see inside the church. It was a lovely little church that, it turns out, Thomas Paine was married in! I learned about the family of Elys that was also known as “Ellis”!! Thought you Carroll girls would get a kick out of that ;P
After Sandwich, we made our way to Deal. Sure enough, there was Jeremy waiting for us right at the bus stop. Christian Bale and his friend Dave met up with us too and we began our tour. There is a great Deal of history here!! ;) We learned that Deal was once a booming port city. Deal is also known for its castle. Built in the shape of a rose, the castle is made of “recycled stone”. It was built when there was a lot of rioting within the church so the stones used were originally from the monasteries that were pillaged during this time.
Next, Jeremy took us out on the pier, the “last remaining fully intact leisure pier in Kent”. They say the pier is the same length of the Titanic but if you want to be exact, it’s about 200 feet longer. Still, it was a fun little (almost) fact. From the edge of the pier, we got to see the coast of France and learned that from certain locations, you can board a ferry to France as a foot passenger for just £1. Definitely gonna have to look into that.
It started raining on us, so we all went inside the pier café for a tea break. Not just any tea I might add—BLACK CURRANT tea <3 <3 When the boys heard that we didn’t have this flavor in America, they decided we were done with the tour. After the rain let up a bit, we embarked on a massive hunt for this candy known as “Chewits” (similar to our Mambas). Apparently this was the best black currant flavored thing ever. We probably stopped in about 4 different stores, all having Chewits, just not our blackcurrant flavor. Let me tell you, this was quite the search!
After turning the whole town upside down trying to locate this candy, stores were starting to close and we had to be getting back to Canterbury. We left Chewit-less but it was such a fun day we didn’t mind. We thanked Jeremy for such a fabulous tour and said goodbye to the boys. Christian Bale promised he would hunt down these black currant Chewits and get them to me. We’ll see about that…
Sandwiches in Sandwich, free tours, spending the day with fun Englishmen… Good DEAL.
Keep Calm and Deal On.
Thanks for reading!
Cheers!
